Internet Access Methods and Dealer Recommendations
|
Ford Motor Company recently mandated that all Dealers have High Speed Internet
access (HSIA) by the end of 2003. To help them in this effort, the Company
established Project Choice - a service that provides Dealers with the technical
resources to identify and evaluate the various high-speed services that are available
in their local area. With this service, Dealers receive a listing of all Internet
service providers that match their needs, free of charge and with no obligation.
In order to take full advantage of this high-speed Internet connection, Dealers may
also request a quote from several of the Ford approved LAN Integrators to connect
all their computers to a single Local Area Network (LAN). This would allow dealership
employees to use any computer on the LAN to access any application.
Dealers initiate the Project Choice service by calling (866) 765-5582
or clicking here.

Ford Motor Company Recommendations to Dealers
|
1.
All Dealers procure High-Speed Internet Access as soon as possible, but no
later than 12/31/03.
2.
Utilize the Project Choice program for HSIA and LAN Integration services,
to ensure they meet the needs of the dealership while complying with technical
standards and Ford minimum requirements.
3.
LAN architecture should follow the Computer Network Guidelines (Olympus standards)
4.
High-Speed Internet Service should meet the following criteria:
·Business grade service
·Provide a persistent connection
·Dedicated IP addresses
5.
In addition, any HSIA should provide the following minimum bandwidths for effective
operation of applications (scaled by dealer network size). Types of service are
general recommendations only. Individual dealership circumstances should be considered
when choosing a specific service type.

*Minimum recommended speeds are for 'up' AND 'down' traffic.
**Cable has limited geographic availability.
++DSL has limited geographic availability. ADSL is not recommended. SDSL and IDSL are
both acceptable. While DSL has good performance and an attractive price, there is some
concern regarding the viability of some DSL providers given that several have declared bankruptcy.
